Unpopular opinion: Sovereigns are overrated

Alright, I know this is going to ruffle some feathers, but hear me out. Sovereigns are the go-to recommendation for every new stacker in the UK. CGT-free, legal tender, historic, blah blah blah. But let's look at the numbers: - Only 7.32g of gold per coin - Premiums are consistently 15-25% above spot - You need nearly 5 Sovereigns to equal one 1oz coin For the same money, you could buy a 1oz Britannia at a lower percentage premium and get MORE gold for your pound. Yes, the CGT exemption is nice. Yes, they're beautiful coins with centuries of history. But are we paying a premium for nostalgia rather than value? Change my mind. Or agree with me. Either way, I want to hear your take.

Completely and utterly disagree. The CGT exemption alone makes Sovereigns worth the premium. When you come to sell, you keep ALL of the profit. Try selling £50k of gold Britannias and handing HMRC 20% of your gains. Suddenly that premium doesn't seem so bad does it?
I actually agree with you on the premiums point. For pure weight-per-pound, Sovereigns are poor value. BUT - they're the most recognisable and trusted gold coin in the UK. Try selling a Krugerrand to your average person on the street vs a Sovereign. Everyone knows what a Sovereign is. That liquidity
You're looking at it wrong. Sovereigns aren't about gold weight per pound - they're about privacy and tax efficiency. Small, discreet, CGT-free, legal tender. They're the most practical gold coin for UK holders. The premium IS the feature.
Bit of both for me. I wouldn't say overrated but I think new stackers put too much into Sovereigns early on. If you're just starting out and have £500 to spend, you'd get more metal buying a 10g bar. Build the weight first, then worry about CGT when your stack is big enough for it to matter.

Yeah, the gold premiums are a killer. That's why I always recommend new stackers look at silver first. You get way more physical ounces for your cash, even with its own premiums. Proper stack builder, that.
